Introduction

Ecoprod objective

The film and audiovisual industry plays a major role in raising awareness among the public of the big environmental issues through the content produced and broadcast.

However, the direct environmental impact of this activity is yet to be measured or taken into account in a dynamic of gradual reduction. Yet the industry requires energy, electronic equipment, a lot of transportation, generate waste (sets) and often enter into contact with sensitive natural and urban environments. The environmental footprint is, therefore, not neutral.

As the Ecoprod partners are aware of this paradox and concerned about the issue in their own networks or companies, they would like to develop measurement tools and actions and make them available to stakeholders from the industry, insofar as possible, adapting them to the range of situations. To do this they will call on the industry for its expertise, technological innovation and widespread involvement.

They are convinced that their approach will be met with a favourable response on the part of professionals and will lead to many of those who wish to make their professional practice consistent with their personal ethics being involved.

The founding principles

1. Long-term effort:

The partners commit to renewing their equal contributions in terms of human and financial resources for at least a year.

2. Opening up

Any organisation that shares the objective and these principles, and that wishes to join the current group of partners, is welcome to join and will have the same rights and responsibilities as existing members.

3. A community of interest that is free to join

The ecoprod.com is a resource centre which is free to access and the purpose of which is to showcase experiences of professionals on the ground.

4. Joined-up Approaches

All issues raised, whether economic, social or cultural in nature, will be considered to the extent that they move collective thinking towards viable solutions, without losing site of the Ecoprod objective.

5. Application in organisations

Each partner agrees to inform its employees, clients, partners and suppliers of the measures selected at the conclusion of deliberations to apply them to its activities.

The Regional Directorate for Industry, Research and Environment (DIRECCTE Ile de France) Ile-de-France, local office of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Employment (MEIE) has an economic development mission in the Paris area. As such, it participates in the development of industrial or service industry SMEs. DIRECCTE Ile de France actively supports businesses through competitive clusters and collective actions plan. These collective actions, divided into 4 thematic areas such as sustainable development, innovation, anticipating economic changes and the creation and transmission of companies can support, each year, some 4,000 SMEs. DIRECCTE Ile de France conducts studies on major industrial sectors present in the Ile-de-France including one on television and one on animation. These studies based on meetings with professionals, present the different sectors and are a source of proposals for actions in support of industry.

Public service broadcaster, France Televisions for channel France 5, must be more than any other, an exemplary business carrying value in line with the times, serving all audiences. Longstanding commitment to sustainable development (the Jangal series has just celebrated 10 years broadcast), the channel broadcasts throughout the year programs that educate viewers on issues of sustainable and fair development for all. Short programs, magazines and documentaries inform, advise, forewarn by providing an overview on major issues like local or individual actions. As such, the channel regularly strengthens and expands its outreach capacity, including its websites. In organizational terms, the company made its 1st carbon footprint survey with the help of ADEME. The in-house approach has consequently increased awareness of prioritized and measurable actions.

TF1 is the first French television channel and is the market leader.TF1’s activities cover the entire range from audiovisual television and film production to distribution of DVDs and music CDs. TF1 also produces multimedia content and is present in the pay-TV business with channels in France and abroad (Eurosport). In 2007, TF1 with the support of ADEME, as part of its approach to corporate responsibility, conducted a carbon footprint survey of its main channel. Program purchases represent the second largest source of GHG emissions in the survey. Considering that the solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of audiovisual productions were still to be determined, both for its domestic production and its suppliers, TF1 set out, at the end of 2008, to seek partners to launch the Ecoprod project.
